JOY

If this circle represents our lives, then there is one quarter of it that is pain and one quarter is joy. Some may ask why is half of it nothing, it is because these are the times when you wait for a bus to arrive and you don't exactly feel a lot of pain or joy waiting for the bus. This is also the time when you sleep where you kinda don't feel anything.

Then with this circle, people might say "I want someone to be able to take the pain away as shown in the next circle. But by then, most of us should realise that is impossible because no one can just come along and just "take the pain away".

But what we can do is not to forget about JOY. No one can just "take the pain away" but we can remind ourselves of the Joy we do have and we can proactively find more things to be joyful about. Then every night when you go to bed, you know that you still look forward to waking up tomorrow morning because there is more Joy in your life than Pain can wrestle with.

  • My two cents' worth.

It's implausible that nothing, absolute blank, is felt at any one time. Even as one sits at a station, purely biding the arrival of the bus/train, one muses upon something. Probably you don't realise that. My suggestion: in the tranquility, listen hard for joy in the birds' singing. In the city's buzzing, pay attention to the laughter of the little ones. Hence, it's exceedingly unlikely one would feel nothing at all, even while waiting for something.

PS: Now I am convinced you are a Maths teacher.

  • Hahaha then should I be convinced that you are an English teacher then...is there a need to take words based on dictionary meaning?

Nothing is just a relative term to Pain and Joy to describes moments where one does not feel extreme pain or joy.

From Helen Keller's words, we can also infer that it is Pain that helps one learn to be brave and patient. And underlying that, we want to learn to be brave and patient because we do not forget that there is still Joy in this world.

  • Ze's conclusion is delightful. Haha, never been so tickled by such a speculation before.

Well, I do teach the language so the tendency to look at words with surface meanings is huge. Nonetheless, I get the drift of Kiddy's writings.

Just to ease the stress of getting too didactical, let's digress abit. Absolutely wonderful to get comments for the postings on your blog, right? I find it so for my case.

  • yo.. i came here to spy after looking at ur msn nick.. bwahahaha. anyway i like this post! it's very "little prince"! n yup makes so much sense :)

I think in life alot of people prefer to, or unconsciously do the opposite tho - proactively look for pain, think they are very cham n miserable, try to quarrel.. etc. Or while looking for someone to take the pain away, they just focus on pain n it grows...

So how leh mr. descartes, what's ur advice (teachings??) on this?

  • I am flattered by Ms Leia =P

Eh hee no teachings but eh maybe can consider focusing on the Joy lo then eh the Pain will tend to become more bearable.

    Simple Joy!
